Thienes Gateway Entrance Beautification The Thienes entrance to the San Gabriel River is in its final stage. This is one of the projects to enhance and restore natural habitats along the river sponsored by the Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina through the Safe Neighborhoods and Parks Propositions. Once the project is completed, it will provide amenities for the local residents, equestrians and bikers. Among these amenities are a new wrought iron gate, rest area for pedestrians and bikers, enhanced horse trail and a rest area for equestrians, trees for shade and native vegetation. During the development of the project, the participation of city and county organizations have been important as well as an essential participation from community based groups.

The Thienes project has been developed on U.S. Army Corps land. The Corps has been supportive of the project from the beginning. The City of South El Monte has taken on the task of providing maintenance for the area on the long term. Different divisions of the Los Angeles Public Works have contributed in different ways in the development of the project. HBT has also contacted Southern California Edison to have the project following the specifications of the Edison right of way. Local youth and South El Monte High School students have participated in the actual development of the project. As a result, the Thienes entrance to the San Gabriel River has 12 totem poles as an art component. HBT expects completion of the site by the end of August 2004.
