Rio Hondo Habitat Restoration

The Rio Hondo habitat restoration is completed. The site is located along the Rio Hondo next to the Rosemead/Garvey Community Center. This project has been funded by Los Angeles Supervisor Gloria Molina through the Safe Neighborhoods and Parks Proposition.

The development of this project included the removal of non native vegetation in an area of about 60,000 square foot.

The restoration of the site included a rest area, enhancement of the hiking trail, and the re introduction of native vegetation with dripping irrigation to more than 2000 plants.

The development of the project has been possible with the cooperation of different organizations and groups. The restoration project has taken place on U.S. Army Corps lands for which they granted authorization for developing the area. The City of Rosemead is contributing with maintenance and the irrigation of the area. Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation had granted authorization to work on the trail.

Students from the Rosemead high schools  participated in the clean up and the planting of the site. For several weekends students and HBT staff worked at the site removing non native vegetation, installing dripping irrigation, and re introducing about 17 species of native plants.
